Getting in

The Night House is for adults: you must be 18 or older to join. When you use the invite, Discord asks you a few screening questions, and staff read each application by hand. When they admit you, you get the @Member חבר role, which opens the server.

The application asks you to:

Read and agree to the server rules.
Give your name and pronouns, and say exactly how you found us: a user, a server, a website, or the search terms you used.
Certify that you’re an adult. We take the server’s adult nature seriously, and lying about your age means an immediate ban.
Describe your current path or practice and your occult interests, with at least two topics and why they interest you. If you’re new to practice, explain what draws you here. Write at least 3–5 full sentences.
Tell us what you hope to gain or contribute, plus your non-occult interests or anything else we should know about you. Again, at least 3–5 full sentences.

Once you’re in:

Read the rules in #about-rules or on the rules page.
Introduce yourself in #introduction, so others can get to know you.
Pick your roles in #roles. They’re optional, and some open more channels. The roles page explains each one.

New members get the @Neophyte טירון role, which keeps them safe from the inactivity prune while they settle in.

Finding your way

The server has a lot of channels, sorted into categories:

Administration: announcements, the rules, introductions, roles, suggestions and polls.
Chat: general conversation, plus separate categories for support, sensitive topics and voice.
Community Square: events, the book nook, shops, self-promotion and server partners.
Media: art, writing, music, memes, pets, food and more.
Occult: general and sensitive occult talk, a channel for each topic from alchemy to thoughtforms, paths and beliefs, and polytheist pantheons.
Spirits: spirit work in general, plus a channel for each of many named spirits, from Abaddon to Verrine.
Bots: where bot commands go (see Commands for what the bot can do).
Archives: older channels that are no longer in use.

To get around, #directory lists the channels and what each one is for (a bot refreshes it weekly), and in #elevator you can search for a channel and jump straight to it. It helps to collapse the categories, and to mute or hide the channels you’re not interested in.

Opt-in areas

Some parts of the server open only with a role. The roles page says what each one is for:

18+ areas, marked 🔞, need the @NSFW Access גישה לתוכן למבוגרים role.
#polemic-pit, for intense debate with limited moderation, needs the @Polemicist פולמוסן role.
#queer-gsrm-general, for talking about your LGBTQIA+ identity, needs the @Pride גאווה role.
The rare archive, channels archived for over a year, needs the @Rare Archive Access גישה לארכיון נדיר role.
The @Nudist נודיסט role is given only by staff, to members they trust.

For a role that only staff give, open a ticket.

Talking to staff

To reach staff privately, open a ticket in #ticket-submission. Use a ticket to report a problem, to ask something you’d rather not ask in public, or to ask for a role that only staff give. Staff don’t always answer DMs, and tickets keep a record (rule 12). If it’s easier to talk it through, staff can bring you into a private voice channel for your ticket.

Activity and the prune

A bot tracks who has sent at least one message in the last 30 days. Members who haven’t get the @Inactive לא פעיל role, and inactive members are currently pruned from the server at every equinox and solstice. A prune is a kick, not a ban, so you can join again.

You’re safe from the prune while you have the Neophyte role, and so are Nitro boosters and server partners. The server’s owner can also grant @Temporary Immunity חסינות זמנית, at their discretion, as an amnesty for someone who has shown recent signs of life.

About the name

The Night House, or House of the Night (בית הלילה), is an homage to Lilith in particular and to the Left Hand Path in general. For Pride Month the server became the Gay Night House (בית לילה גאה), and the name stayed.

In gematria, בית לילה גאה adds up to 496: the same as מלכות (Malkuth) and לויתן (Leviathan). 496 is also a perfect number, equal to the sum of its divisors.
